I don't like when people say they're going to do something and they don't. Maybe they promise to help. Maybe they promise to start. Maybe they say they'll finish. Maybe they said they'd call. Or do something good. Maybe they said they'd come. Or they'd help. Or they'd deliver. Whatever it is. I don't like fakers, who give you hot air fluff and create a mirage of endless nothings.
That's why I'm in big trouble. 'Cause right now I am one.
A while back, last Spring, a baby's baptism, I was there. And so was someone else who mattered, who wouldn't let me off the hook, who cornered me, who drilled me, who insisted, who encouraged, who led. By the end of the lunch, I had promised I would have a completed fiction manuscript completed by midnight, clock strikes twelve, December 31, 2007. And that lump of paper packed with words has to be on the other side of the country by that clock stroke.
And I'm going to be in big trouble if the big hand strikes twelve on that eve of 2008 and I'm not done.
But I haven't started.
In then end, all we have is our word. Our trust. And today, I was reminded, I owe somebody my word. In fact, lots of my words.
So today, I promise to start.
Tonight I'll write a paragraph, and then I'll only have a measly multi-thousands of words minus 250 to go.
Wish me luck, because clearly. . . it's not looking good. I'm cramming for the final, I haven't opened the book yet and will be pulling a three month all nighter. And if I fail, I'm going to find myself lumped into that category of people who make hot air promises and don't deliver the goods. I'll find myself hanging out with those hot air promise people who bail out, give up, check out before its over, Hillary, Nancy, Harry, Al. A crowd I don't care to join.
So, logging off to write that first 250. Touchdown, three months. Hail Mary, here it goes.
You are going to let us read it when you are finished, right? If your words on this blog are any indication of your ability to engage the reader, it's gonna be a best seller! Ready, Set, GO!
Faith and Smiles,
Lynnis
